Frequently Asked Questions

Product

  • What are the electrodes for?

Electrodes capture the electrical activity being produced on the surface of your brain simply by contacting your skin. This is why the electrodes at the top of the headset are shapes like a comb to be able to move through your hair; and the bottom electrodes are smooth because they sit behind your ear away from your hairline. The have a specially designed coating that looks silvery-greyish in colour which wears out over time. Depending on how much hair you have and your usage, you can typically expect to replace your electrodes every few months.

  • Will hair products interfere with my electrode connection?

Yes. If possible, try to train before you use any products in your hair, or train straight after you have washed your hair. This will give you the best chance and getting a good connection between your scalp and the electrodes while your skin is still moist.

  • Do I need an internet connection?

Axon will work offline for a small period of time, allowing you to login 30 times before requiring an internet connection to contine. This is because your data needs to be synced and backed up in the cloud in order for you to view your session history and progress.

  • Do I need to download an app?

Yes, the Axon app is available on both Google's "Play Store" and Apple's "App Store". Availability will depend on the region you are in and whether Axon us currently registered in your market. You can find the app by searching with the terms "Axon Neurofeedback", confirming the correct author is Exsurgo. The is app is only available on mobile and is not currently supported on Windows or Mac.

  • Does the headset double as a set of headphones?

While the headset may look like a set of headphones, it is not. The headset has vents in the earcups designed to let sound pass through unaffected. The Axon headset is a medical device with the intended purpose of recording and transmitting EEG data only, without impeding the user’s ability to hear their surroundings.

  • What battery does Axon use?

The Axon headset uses a single AAA battery. Any kind of AAA battery should work so long as it meets the typical AAA voltage rating of 1.5V (use time will vary depending on the quality). The longest lasting battery we have tested is the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAA Battery.

Training

  • Can I close my eyes during training sessions?

No. Closing your eyes will prevent the effectiveness of the treatment. Neurofeedback uses visual and auditory feedback, so maintaining eye contact with the screen is essential. If you feel tired, you can close your eyes briefly during the rest breaks in between training blocks. Experiment with different game interaction strategies to find what works best for you, but avoid looking away from the screen or closing your eyes during training.

  • Which game should I play?

Experiment with different games in the beginning to find your preferred choice. The goal is to pick a game that makes you feel relaxed and happy, as this can enhance the effectiveness of neurofeedback. Your preference may change over time as your brain adapts. Enjoy the experience and choose the game that brings you the most joy for optimal results.

  • When is the best time to do a training session?

That will depend on your schedule. You should avoid training when you are tired as you will likely become sleepy during the training session; therefore, limiting the trainings efficacy. Consistency is key, so finding a time in your day that you can stick to will help you develop the habit of making time for yourself with Axon.

  • Where is the best place to do a training session?

You should train in a comfortable, quiet location where you can relax and not be disturbed, such as on your lounge or in a comfortable chair. Make sure you are not too close to any electrical equipment, such as air conditioning units or large appliances, as this can interfere with the headset.

The tablet should be at eye level so that you are not looking down or straining your neck, which can interfere with the EEG recording and the fitment of the headset. Make sure you have some water nearby to sip during the rest breaks.

  • What should I be thinking about during a training session?

The goal is to relax and let your brain do the work. While there is no specific thing you need to think about, here are some tips:

    • Focus on your breath: This can help you stay grounded and present.
    • Allow your mind to wander: Don’t fight any thoughts that arise. Just observe them without judgment.
    • Avoid straining or forcing anything: The training is designed to be a passive experience.
    • Trust the process: Neurofeedback works by providing your brain with information about its own activity.
  • What if I forget to train?

If you forget to train, then set yourself a reminder for the following day. It is important to do at least 5 sessions a week for your initial treatment to get the best results. It might be helpful to choose which days every week you would like to train and then put a reminder in your calendar.

  • Why is it important to do 5 sessions a week?

It is important that you train as frequently as you can, as this will give your brain the best chance of changing over the long term. However, it’s always good to have a day off every week just to give your brain a rest.

  • Why are some sessions easy and others harder?

Your brain activity is always changing and it’s perfectly normal to have days with more and less reward, even if you don’t feel any different. The key is to not be too hard on yourself and trust in your ability to remain relaxed and focused throughout the session. It is important to keep going and persist with the sessions to determine how your brain changes over months rather than day to day.

  • Why can I not perform more than one session a day?

Neurofeedback training is a bit like going to the gym - it is a workout for your brain. As you learn to self-regulate your brain activity, many changes can happen to the structure and function of your brain.  The brain needs time to rest and assimilate the training, which is why we limit to one session a day.

  • What happens if I perform a partial session?

The session will be marked as incomplete unless you finish the session before the end of the day. If you start a session and then stop halfway through, you can finish the session on the same day, but you will need to go through the baseline process again before completing the remaining training blocks.

  • Should I train if I have been drinking caffeine or sugary drinks?

You should wait for at least one hour after drinking any liquids containing caffeine (e.g. tea, coffee, or energy drinks) or lots of sugar, such as soft drinks. This is because caffeine and excess sugary drinks cause the brain to change and will affect your results.

  • Should I train if I have been drinking alcohol?

No! Alcohol causes the brain to change and affects many areas of brain activity. If you have been drinking, you must not use the headset or do any training. If you have been drinking heavily the night before, the alcohol will still be in your system and so you should not train the following day either, as your brain activity will still be affected.

  • Should I train if I am unwell?

If you're feeling unwell such that you are unable to focus and engage in the Axon training, it's best to skip your training session to avoid suboptimal results. Prioritize your health and recovery. When you're ready to resume, simply pick up where you left off. It's normal to have breaks due to illness, and you'll likely recover any lost progress over time.

  • How still do I need to be?

You should be still but relaxed. There’s no need to stress yourself with being as still as a statue. The headset is very sensitive as a result of the brain signals that it is detecting being extremely small. For the best experience, we recommend you be seated in a comfortable and up right position with your device at eye level.

  • Can anyone else use my Axon account?

No, your account contains data about you and someone else’s EEG data will influence the analytics stored under your login.
